Barbara Hoffer

Barbara Hoffer turned to Pilates in 1997, when the corporate management training career she loved left her body a “wreck” due to constant travel and undue stress. Now a ‘Vitality Buddy’ for her clients, she offers coaching and Pilates instruction designed to enhance daily life.

Certified as a Massage Therapist and Hatha Yoga Instructor since 1981, Barbara completed her Pilates Instructor Certification from The Physical Mind Institute of NYC . Certified as a Post Op Exercise Therapist, Barbara customizes rehabilitation and functional fitness programs to address weakness, health conditions and postural problems for all bodies.

“Whether the client’s focus is losing weight, living stronger after cancer or with Parkinson’s disease,” says Hoffer, “every body gets a mulligan (a ‘do over’) everyday. “

Hoffer especially enjoys working with special populations to help them strengthen those bodies recovering from hip replacements, knee and shoulder surgery. As a cancer survivor herself, she is compassionate about helping others gain and maintain a healthier body at each stage of life.

Client Testimonials

I tried Pilates in 2005 as a last resort to an excruciating back problem I’d had for decades. Because I had tried everything else, the last thing I expected was a “magic bullet” after so many years and so much pain, but to my amazement it was just that. I’ve been working with Barbara for about two years, taking her reformer class as well as a “duet” Barbara knows her stuff and tailors her teaching to your skill level (pushing just enough so you can improve, but not so much you can’t keep up). She is savvy about the body and never runs out of different approaches to your needs. I had a “frozen shoulder” last year which limited my ability to do many of the exercises. She found a way of working around my injury so I could stay fit while working with a physical therapist to heal my injured shoulder. Barbara combines a very personable style with a strong focus on the work. Warning: she comes with a southern accent! I happily give her five stars.

Barbara has been working with me to build core strength and better posture in an effort to keep me off meds for osteoporosis. I feel greater leg strength and carry myself with more confidence than I did before I began. Barbara has so many good qualities it’s difficult to pick just a few. Suffice it to say that she is resourceful–if one thing doesn’t work she quickly comes up with another–encouraging, kind, full of energy. Hers is not a cookie-cutter method; she quickly found my strengths and weaknesses and worked with them. She is one of the good ones of the world.

I have been trained by four different pilates instructors over the course of six months on a somewhat regular schedule, and Barbara is by far the best of them. She’s an experienced and devoted instructor, and attentive from the moment you enter her studio. She’s observant and knows right away when I’m doing something wrong and is quick to adjust my position to avoid injury. The adorable thing about her is that I don’t even have to adjust the springs myself! She does it for me!

I believe I’ve had four lessons to date with her, and each time she’s taught me something new. She recognizes my potential and offers something different each time to keep my body challenged. I never feel like our time is wasted with idle chitchat or weird mind/body meditation like I have with other instructors. She gets down to business and is very time conscious. There are days when I feel drained or just plain lazy, but after her class, I feel refreshed and energized. Barbara also tends to work out alongside of you if there’s an available reformer, so it’s easy to follow her example….if you can keep up with her. Just as a side. I had a class with her yesterday, and I can barely walk today; legs sore, abs sore, it hurts to laugh. But I know I’ll be laughing all the way to the dept. store when I buy that bikini.
